Inspired by Bioshock and Layers of Fear

Game overview

Space Within draws inspiration from German Expressionism, blending a striking visual style with gameplay that evokes the immersive action of BioShock and the psychological intensity of Layers of Fear. The result is a rich and mesmerizing adventure that balances narrative depth with visceral gameplay.

Set within the haunting landscape of a fractured mind, the game follows a desperate struggle for survival and self-discovery. To escape the horrors within, the protagonist must confront his inner demons and unlock the memories that hold the key to his freedom.

At its core, Space Within is a story about loss, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s self.

Plot & Theme

Jack spent his childhood plagued by relentless hallucinations. His only refuge was his favorite video game, Out Into Space, where he could lose himself in worlds far removed from his own. Through medication, Jack eventually found stability, growing up to marry and raise two beautiful children.

But one fateful night, on the way home from a family picnic, Jack’s hallucinations returned. In an instant, he lost everything.

He awakens in a mental hospital, under suicide watch, his memory fractured, unable to recall how he ended up there.

Entry Point

You open your eyes to find yourself in a hospital bed. Restraints bind your wrists, bandages cover your arms, and confusion clouds your mind. You can’t remember who you are or how you arrived here. Panic grips you, cold and suffocating, before darkness swallows everything.

When you regain consciousness, you find yourself in a vast open field. At its center stands a majestic, glowing tree, radiating calm. Beside it waits a wise, battle-worn cat, your spirit animal. She explains that you are trapped in a mental hospital, ensnared by an evil entity known as the Sickness. To save yourself, you must journey deep into your own mind, confront your fears, recover your memories, and overthrow the Sickness once and for all.

Terrified yet resolute, you take on the form of your childhood hero from Out Into Space, a manifestation of your will to fight, determined to set things right.

Core Game Loops:

The gameplay is deliberately crafted to mirror the stages of a mental therapy process, blending symbolic mechanics with intense, atmospheric exploration.

Linking Memories – Players open mysterious portals by piecing together fragments of the protagonist’s past, progressing through layers of his psyche.

Confronting Pain – Key memories are locked behind emotional barriers. To access them, players must sacrifice health to extract “memory keys”, engaging in tense fetch-style sequences that represent confronting painful truths.

Facing Fears and Anxieties – Through a mix of combat and escape mechanics, players must stand their ground against manifestations of fear, or flee from overwhelming threats.

Digging Deeper – A unique flashlight and invisibility system forces players to truly “look” for the hidden roots of trauma, revealing memory locks and invisible enemies that embody buried emotions and unresolved conflicts.
